Italy is a wine country… right? Over the last 20 or so years — especially the last decade — Italy has quietly become a beer country, too. Creative brewers embracing local and regional culinary traditions have sprung forth to offer Italian interpretations of the world’s great beer styles.

On this BeerTrip we explore the coastal elegance of Ravenna, the mountaintop republic of San Marino, the Tuscan countryside around Rapolano Terme (home of the beloved Villaggio della Birra festival), the medieval beauty of Siena, and the world-famous food capital of Bologna.

Beer, Food, History & Local Flavor — From the Adriatic to Emilia-Romagna

We start in relaxed and historic Ravenna, with its golden mosaics, Adriatic seafood and emerging coastal beer scene. Then we rise into San Marino, a tiny republic perched high above the plains — a place of towers, cliffs, sweeping views and quiet medieval charm.

Villaggio della Birra, deep in Tuscany, forms the beery heart of the journey: Italian farmhouse ales, Belgian inspirations, small local producers, food stalls, live music and a wonderfully warm Italian crowd. We stay nearby in Rapolano Terme, a spa town known for its thermal springs.

From there we travel into Siena — a masterpiece of medieval architecture, contrade neighborhoods, local cheese traditions and Tuscan wines. We finish in Bologna, where mortadella, prosciutto, Parmigiano-Reggiano, balsamico and creative birrifici make Emilia-Romagna one of the world’s greatest culinary regions. A day in Parma and Modena brings us to dairies, prosciutto houses and the legendary balsamic attics of Modena’s families, as well as glimpses of the famous Motor Valley.

About the Cities & Regions We Visit

Ravenna — Adriatic Calm, Seafood & Golden Mosaics

Ravenna blends quiet streets, seafood traditions, golden mosaics and coastal beer culture. Local cheeses and soft breads add depth to Romagna’s food identity, while nearby beaches and piadine shops give the city a relaxed seaside feel.

San Marino — Towers, Cliffs & Mountain Air

A mountaintop micro-country with stone lanes, medieval towers, hearty cuisine, distinctive wines and a small but expressive beer culture. The views stretch across the plains toward the Adriatic, and the evenings feel pleasantly removed from the rush below.

Rapolano Terme & Tuscany — Thermal Waters & Italian Ales

Rapolano Terme is a spa town with hot springs, rolling hills and family-run wineries nearby. It’s also near Villaggio della Birra, one of Italy’s most beloved beer gatherings, where farmhouse ales and Belgian-inspired brews meet Tuscan hospitality.

Siena — Medieval Lanes & Tuscan Soul

Brick architecture, contrade flags, wine bars, butchers, cheese shops and deep-rooted culinary traditions define this stunning city. Siena’s streets are made for wandering, snacking and sipping.

Bologna — Italy’s Culinary Capital

Mortadella, prosciutto, Parmigiano-Reggiano, balsamico, fresh pasta and a creative beer scene make Bologna a world-class food destination. Traditional osterie now share the streets with modern birrifici and beer bars.

TRAVEL DETAILS:

Air Travel is not included. Travelers are encouraged to use mileage awards, travel outside group dates, or visit other European cities while abroad to make the most out of the trip. Please confirm the trip’s operation before purchasing air tickets.

Most Trips officially begin in the lobby of the first hotel. Meeting times, information about getting from the airport or train station to the hotel, the detailed itinerary, hotel addresses, and a trip roster will be included with your Final Trip Documents, which you’ll receive 2 – 3 weeks before the trip.

How we travel on tour: All included excursions and visits include transportation. Within the cities, we rely on walking and private or public transportation (uber, taxis, busses, trams, etc.). Travel between cities is by private motor coach, luxury van, ferry, and/or rail.

REGARDING INCLUDED MEALS AND BEER:

We don’t mess around when it comes to food and beer. Restaurants — tried and true — have been carefully selected, based on quality, local knowledge, and insider tips. On a Beer Trip, included meals mean you may order as you please – including beer, appetizers, dessert, etc. We are not stingy — a lot of food and beer is included on every Beer Trip.

PLEASE NOTE:

A BeerTrips beer tour is best suited for somewhat adventurous, beer-loving travelers who want the camaraderie and structure of a tour, as well as the opportunity to explore independently. Planned events, brewery visits, locally guided tours, and some excursions are, of course, formally “guided”. Travel days, on trains, public means, or the beer bus, as well some group walks, are blissfully unstructured, though travelers can always rely on the support and assistance of the trip leader.

THIS ITINERARY IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE:

In rare cases, it may be necessary to alter the itinerary based on brewery or hotel availability, force majeur, acts of dieties, common sense, or bad weather, etc. Smaller breweries, as well as the Trappists, are often unable to commit to hosting groups until a couple of weeks before we arrive. Substitutions, when necessary, will be as good as what we replaced. And, don’t worry, the beer is always good!
